Your Horse Is What He Eats

 In Blog

You’ve heard the old adage, “you are what you eat.” It may be a bit cliche, but it’s not too far from the truth. We know that our overall well being can be dramatically affected by what we eat. But do we think about the fact that the same is true for our horses?

I’m no equine nutritionist and certainly don’t claim to be, but over years of owning and working with horses, I’ve noticed some things, and I’ve put together a short list of tips to keep in mind when choosing feeds and treats for your horse.

1. Choose The Right Feed For The Job

There are different types of feed and each one will affect your horse differently. Many people opt for cheap feeds with lots of sugar; but with lots of sugar comes lots of excess energy. If that excess energy isn’t burned off, it often translates into a behavioral problem such as hyperactivity, or a physical problem such as founder or laminitis.

For the average horse owner, I always recommend a forage-based feed that’s going to be easy on the gut and more forgiving if they overeat.

2. Let Your Horse Graze

I know, not everyone has the ability to graze their horses regularly. But in my experience it’s a preferable way for them to eat. Horses that have the ability to graze tend to have fewer digestive issues, fewer instances of colics and ulcers, and ultimately are happier, healthier horses.

3. Read The Labels

Here’s a tip you might have heard for your own food: as a rule, avoid feeds and treats with excessively long ingredient lists. Words that are long and difficult to pronounce are often just as difficult to digest! In my experience, these products are usually filled with sugar and fillers that don’t benefit your horse.

Instead of these, look for feeds and treats that are made of simple, natural ingredients. These are more like the diet your horse would have naturally, so his body is better able to process them.

We love our horses too much not to be mindful when caring for their health and nutrition. If you want a strong, sound horse, you can’t feed them weak, artificial foods!
