HOW DO I GAIN TRUST WITH RESCUES?

Note: The following excerpt is the transcript from a question I answered from my Facebook Live made in the Steady Horse Facebook Group on 7/24/19. Watch the video or read the text below to learn the answer to the question.

One of the things that I recommend is just going out and spending time with them. In a previous post, I wrote about a lady who was having trust issues with her mare who didn’t come to her when she called. Go out. Spend a little bit of time with them, pique their curiosity and interest and then walk away so that your horse wants to be with you, you want to develop that draw in your horse.

Most people do a really bad job of that draw. We all love our horses, so we go out after them and we’re loving and rubbing on them. But it’s so important to withdraw and to begin to draw our horses back towards us. So I encourage that. And then the other thing too is making sure that when you’re around them that you’re very relaxed, that you’re taking nice big deep breaths, that you’re smiling, that you’re in a good mood, that you’re happy because your horse senses all of these things.

They’ll work to spend time with you and begin to trust you more, because they know that being with you is a safe place. And ultimately that’s what we want to do is we want to provide a safe place for our horses to be.
