What if my horse starts bucking after I ask them to move out?

In Blog, Ground Work, Horse Health

If I have a horse that I know pitches or bucks, I’m going to do a lot of groundwork with them first, and specifically with, groundwork.

I want to make sure that they’re sending out, when I talk about sending, it’s a little bit different from lunging. It’s making their feet move with purpose. so when I ask my pony to move out, I want him to walk, trot, and canter.

When I ask him to, I want him to do good downward transitions. When I take a deep breath, I want them to go from a canter, down into a trot. When I take a deep breath at to trot, I want him to go from a trot down into the walk.

What I’m looking for are those things in my horse. Sometimes what will happen is if you have a cold back horse or a young horse or just a horse that hasn’t had a whole lot of the groundwork and riding done, they might pitch and buck.

And if they start to pitch and buck, what I’m going to do is I’m going to keep doing these transitions. If he starts pitching, when I send them into a trot, I’ll just let them trot out then pitch a little bit, and then I’ll breathe them back down into a walk then I’ll ask for the trot again then the canter, then I’ll bring them back down to the trot.
